Air Compressor Oil
Choose a high quality air compressor oil and change it regularly to get the best performance from your system. We have engineered our compressor oils so you get the best performance from whatever make or model of air compressor you have.
The only oils we recommend for your compressor are Altair Lubricants. This range is engineered by ABAC to suit every aspect of your equipment and keep the risk of expensive breakdowns to a minimum. You can buy semi-synthetic or synthetic compressor oil online.
Can I use motor oil in my compressor?
In a word, “No”. You should use Altair high performance compressor oils because motor oil contains detergents that are unsuitable for your air compressor. Compressor oil is a mineral or synthetic oil that is high in antioxidants. Altair use a special combination of antioxidants to keep your oil from turning thick, sludgy and changing colour for longer. These oils have the correct pH for our air compressors and they reduce the risk of your air filters clogging up, overheating bearings, lower performance. That’s why this is the only lubricant we recommend for ABAC compressors.
What goes wrong if you don’t change your compressor oil often enough?
Unfortunately, when you don’t change the oil in your air compressor – or when you use the wrong oil – bad things can happen. The most common problems are:
- Piston failure
- Wear of components, increased friction, cavitations
- Reduced cooling, overheating bearings, components
- Reduced critical clearance
- Wrong pH damage of parts, seals and internals
- Low performance, higher energy consumption
- High unpredictable maintenance cost
- Clogging of air filters
- Limited operation range.
These things happen because oil oxidises over time. When you choose oil for air compressors you need to pick one, like Altair, that can cope. Altair Lubricants have been designed to stand up to the causes of oxidation but even they need replacing at the right intervals. Cheaper oils are a false economy because they oxidise faster so you need to service your equipment more often and you are more likely to find sludge building up in your air compressor.
|Causes of Oil Oxidisation||Effect of Reduced Oil Lifetime: Sludge|
|High operating temperatures||Deposits form|
|High deposit formation||Oil thickens|
|No additives to disperse or clean oxidation products and soluble organic acids||Lacquering occurs on surfaces|
